My name is Terri Brewer and I have been selling real estate for the past eleven years in and around the Baddeck area.
I am super excited to introduce readers to my home town and it’s many amenities. The beauty of the town with it’s new sidewalks and lamp posts invites visitors to casually roam around and take in the atmosphere of small town life. As a village, we’re proud to have been chosen as ” top 20 places to retire” in North America in Retirement Weekly magazine.  http://www.lookingforward2.com/PDF/RetirementWeek_Dec2004.pdf

I was thrilled to be asked to contribute information on Baddeck as well as upcoming events. This is my chance to educate visitors as well as show off the home town I adore.  Each week I will post market news and trends as well as upcoming events in the Baddeck and surrounding areas. I will introduce readers to Island living and the casual way of life
that is Cape Breton.

Now for a bit of history about Baddeck. The name itself is said to be derived from the Mi’kmaq word abadack meaning “place with an Island near”. One of the first settlers was  a man by the name of Captain Jonathan Jones. He settled in Big Baddeck near the river and was closely followed by the Loyalists and settlers from Scotland and Ireland. Many of the descendants of these settlers can still be found living in these areas. The year was 1885 when Alexander Graham Bell and his wife arrived with their two daughters by boat from the Strait of Canso and eventually settled in Beinn Bhreagh. Baddeck was the site of the first controlled powered aircraft flight in the British Empire, the Silver Dart,
on February 23rd 1909. Tragically, in 1908 , a bout of Cholera struck the village and took the lives of 31 villagers. Tragedy struck again in 1926 with a fire that destroyed some twenty buildings.
