Named for famous explorer John Cabot, and voted as a top destination to visit by Traveler’s Magazine, the Cabot Trail winds around the rocky shores of Cape Breton’s northern tip. This magnificent highway is carved out of the sides of mountains and offers gorgeous views along the way via look-offs. Encompassed within the Trail is the Cape Breton Highlands National Park and the Highland Links Golf Course which is ranked within the top 100 courses in the world.
Moose are often seen in the highlands and you must be careful as car and moose collisions are noted each year…more oft than not the moose is the victor. I’d say in about two weeks the leaves should be in full colour and the trip around the trail will be awesome. Kodak moments will be in abundance to capture the splendor and serve as a reminder of the beauty of Cape Breton.
You can complete the trail in a few hours but it’s best explored over a day or two so you can get off the beaten track and discover your own favorite place to linger. Each Spring the Cabot Trail plays host to a group of runners from all over the globe competing to see which team can relay run the trail the fastest. It’s a great event and camaraderie runs amok. Sixty teams of seventeen runners make up the Cabot Trail Relay, another venue for the trail to show off it’s wonder.
Don’t miss out on the colours of nature before ole man winter calls, pack up the family, pack up some lunch and head to the highlands!
Wishing one and all a great day!
