Baddeck in winter…what is there to do?

January 29th, 2010 by Terri in Community, Events, cape breton

Well…you can curl, ski, snowmobile, hike with snowshoes, skate and stroll around the Village. Winter certainly slows down the activity in the Village but it’s not dead. Most of the shops and restaurants are still open and there is always a fundraising dinner or luncheon in a community Hall. Watching  local High School sporting events is always a pleasure.  Minor Hockey keeps Mom and Dad busy throughout the winter in hopes of making it to Provincials in their respective level.

Visit Baddeck any time of year…you won’t be disappointed.

Have a super day!

Celtic Colours, Cape Breton

October 9th, 2009 by Terri in Baddeck Real Estate, Community, Events, cape breton, sydney

It’s here….the much anticipated festival of music starts tonight with the show Island to Island: The Cape Breton-Ireland Musical Bridge at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre at 7:30 pm. People from all around the world join the locals in celebration of Celtic music in venues all over the Island.

The festival lasts nine days and exposes Cape Breton and Celtic culture to the rest of the world through music and work shops. The uniqueness of the festival is that it is not limited to a single community but encourages visitors to travel to many communities to enjoy the music while enjoying one breathtaking view after another.

Celtic Colours International Festival has grown by leaps and bounds since 1997 when the first festival was launched in Cape Breton.  Awards include the 2007  Tourism Industry Association of Canada Event of the Year and Attractions Canada Top Cultural Event 2001 plus several more.

Hoping  the 2009 Colours is a raging success as were previous years. Cheers!

Wishing one and all a super day.

Labour Day in Baddeck,Cape Breton.

September 6th, 2009 by Terri in Baddeck Real Estate, Community, Events, Sheltered Cove, bras d'or lakes, cape breton, ocean frontage, view

The Labour Day holiday is a result of labour union movement to celebrate the achievements of workers. Their idea of a fair work day was eight hours of work, eight hours of leisure and eight hours of rest. My focus today will be on what you can do in your leisure time in and around Baddeck. I like to hike to the Uisge Ban Falls then picnic in the park area. There are many more hiking trails not far from Baddeck. North River Falls are more of a challenge as are the Fairy Hole Trail.   If hiking is not your thing then why not try a boat tour?

The Amoeba is still taking people out to explore the lake and feed the bald eagles as well as a Puffin Boat Tour of the Bird Islands. You can take in a museum or explore the Mini-Mall shops. Regardless of your choice of recreation, Baddeck and area offers some unique scenery  whether you are on land or water. Enjoy your stay and relax on Labour Day, take some photos and I will post them with credit going to you.

Wishing everyone a super day!

Baddeck summers…

July 18th, 2009 by Terri in Baddeck Real Estate, Community, Events, Margaree river, bras d'or lakes, cape breton

     IRON MINES

The latest buzz around the Island is our recent accolades in global travelers magazines. It’s humbling to be recognized above such places as the tropical Island of Bali in one magazine then placing third in Travel and Leisure magazine in Best Islands in the World category.  Cape Breton is so diverse in its scenery and vistas from the coastal cliffs of northern most part of the island to the sweeping hills of the Margaree Valley.

Some suggestions for a weekend visit to Cape Breton should include such activities as kayaking, canoeing, whale watching , hiking, touring and of course golfing. Also, there are boat tours, cycling groups, adventure tours and ceilidhs.

If that’s not enough excitement for you, try shopping, dining, museum exploring, swimming or fishing. Adventure in Cape Breton is limited to your imagination…have fun!

Summer in Cape Breton.

June 20th, 2009 by Terri in Baddeck Real Estate, Community, Events, cape breton

Tomorrow is the first day of summer, at last! After what seemed like a winter that went on forever we can now enjoy the outdoor beauty of Cape Breton. Speaking of outdoors…or doors themselves, I’ve encountered a couple of oddly ( but pretty) coloured moths hanging around on my door today.

The green one is about 3 inches in length and the pink and yellow one is much smaller. I am on a mission to identify their origin. Anyone have any suggestions?

Baddeck was host to the Silver Dart Centennial Air Show this past Wednesday and what a show it was. The aerobatic F18’s with their ear-splitting sound effects were a highlight for me and my deck guests…all of whom swore they were having a coronary after the jet arrived from behind ,  without  advance notice for the spectators.

It’s National Aboriginal Day, a great way to learn more about the Mi’kmaq historic culture and rich history. Did you know the first known inhabited Mi’kmaq site in the Maritimes dates back more than 10,000 years?

Don’t forget to visit the three Canadian war ships that have arrived in Sydney Harbour. Also, the Wagmatcook  weekly gatherings are in full swing for the summer. Check out their weekly shows.

Remember…where you can and when you can, buy local.

Wishing one and all a super day!

Thanks to John Johnson of the Victoria Standard ( our local paper in Baddeck ) for indentifying the Luna Moth and I have found out the pink and yellow moth is a Rosy Maple Moth. Cheers everyone.

Baddeck Attractions

May 27th, 2009 by Terri in Baddeck Real Estate, Community, Events, bras d'or lakes, cape breton

It’s starting to look like summer around here. Unfamiliar faces line the streets and cafes and  parking lots are littered with foreign plates. There are so many attractions in and around Baddeck for visitors to enjoy. We have the Alexander Graham Bell Museum where you can marvel at his pioneering spirit and enjoy hands-on activities that take you back to the 1900’s.

You can golf at Bell Bay Golf Club and enjoy a peaceful round on this 18 hole, world class course then dine at Alexander’s restaurant which comes highly recommended. Tours by land or water, take a scenic tour of the Cabot Trail with Bannockburn Tours or enjoy a sail on the Ameoba around the lake. Is culture of interest to you? Check out the Gaelic College with it’s gaelic language classes and ceilidhs( pronounced Kay-lee).

Whatever your interests are, I am sure you will find your visit to be pleasant and filled with happy memories and I hope you are left with a desire to return to our charming Village.

Wishing one and all a super day!
