Daily life of 100 years ago was re-enacted this past weekend as Baddeck celebrates it’s 100th anniversary of the incorporation of the Village. The mail run of the days long ago came to life again aboard the local boat Tug O’War as a few people dressed in period costumes made the historic run to Iona to pick up the mail as it was carried out 100 years ago. The mail was then delivered to the rail station for it’s final leg off the island.
Baddeck was, and still is, the hub of activity for Victoria County. It’s great to see the Village come alive with tourists and locals alike taking in the pleasant weather and enjoying all Baddeck and area has to offer. New light posts and a tribute to Alexander and Mabel Bell are being installed on Water Street.
On June 20th, Ride the Lobster will stroll , or should I say roll , into town ending an 800 kilometer unicycle race from Yarmouth to Baddeck. We should see an increase of beach visitors having 1 of the top 25 best beaches in Canada , as ranked by Canadian Geographic Magazine. Ingonish Beach is located in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park on the world famous Cabot Trail. Speaking of ” up north”, the Heart of the Highlands Triathlon takes place June 22, 2008 and should be a great event for everyone involved.
As I stroll down the main street this morning taking in all the shops, restaurants, bakeries and cafes abuzz with patrons enjoying the merchandise, I get the image of a big sign on the TransCanada highway at exits 8 and 10 that just reads ” OPEN”
Wishing one and all a great day!
